The Executives Complete Activity First Aid

On the weekend of the 24th February, Megan (the squadron adjutant) and Tom (the squadron training officer) attended a weekend first aid course, where they refreshed all the essential skills required of staff leading enhanced training.

First Aid is an essential qualification for all cadets and staff and the organisation offers several levels of first aid qualifications depending on need. All new cadets and staff complete Essential First Aid (EFA) within their first 6 months which, as the name suggests, covers the essentials such as the recovery position, calling for an ambulance, and Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR). Further into their careers, Youth First Aid (YFA) and Activity First Aid (AFA) can be completed over two full days for a more thorough first aid education. Additional top-ups are available for subject matter such as catastophic bleeding.

Megan said:

“Tom and I undertook the AFA course to allow us to instruct all cadets and adult volunteers in both essential first aid and the bronze award (Youth First Aid). In the future I intend to utilise the resources the RAFAC offer to continue my progression to become an assessor and trainer in AFA to further progress individuals across the Wing and Region — just a snippet of the exciting opportunities the RAFAC has to offer!”

The digital resuscitation dolls allow assessors to monitor the pace, depth, and overall effectiveness of a first aider’s CPR technique, and is also useful for demonstrating how quickly good technique can deteriorate as fatigue sets in.
